Music
Music is the sound track to our lives and transcends different cultures, economic status, academic ability and physical status. At The Albert Pye and Ravensmere Federation of Schools, we aim to instill a passion for music, develop well-rounded musicians, and provide a foundation for future musical exploration and learning.
How do we teach music at our schools?
Our school follows the Charanga Model Music Curriculum which sets out sequences of learning in the following key areas which, when taken together, all contribute towards the steadily increasing development of musicianship:
• Singing
• Listening
• Composing
• Performing/Instrumental Performance
By offering a rich and varied musical framework that nurtures fundamental musical techniques alongside building musical knowledge it is our ambition that every young person should be able to experience music and make progress across the Key Stages.
Children in all phases of the school have a music session per week

Music Assessment
Key learning statements for each year group outline the expected learning and standards. We use adaptive teaching techniques to ensure all children are included and can achieve in music. Teacher judgements against the expected standards and assessment evidence are both used in tracking the progression and engagement of each child's musical journey. We capture key learning moments to ensure rapid and sustained progress and use regular quizzes, multiple choice questions and assessment for learning across each unit of work.
Each unit of work has an ‘Assessment Checkpoint’ where we assess if children are working towards (WT), working at the expected standard (WA) or working beyond/at greater depth (WB/GD). These assessments inform an overall assessment at the end of the year.
Private Music Tuition
We offer opportunities for children to learn to play the piano, clarinet and flute, saxophone, guitar and recorder.
There is a weekly charge to parents for this, paid directly to the music teacher with no profit to the school.
The lessons are delivered by Mrs Kate Horsley and Rebecca George Broom and Suffolk Music Specialist teachers
Please enquire at the school office if you would like your child to take part.
We plan experiences using local musical events, making use of the local link to Aldeburgh and Snape music, including the 'Big Sing' in Year 4 and accessing support from a specialist music teacher in Nursery from the Red House. We provide opportunities for the children to perform to their peers, the school community , the wider community and the public. These include performing in class and assemblies, in Church at Harvest, Christmas and Easter and our Summer Showcase.
We are very proud of our school choir which meets weekly and is led by Mrs Cameron and Mrs Kelly. The choir meet every Tuesday after school from 3:15-4:15pm. Children from Years 1-6 are welcome to attend - please ask at the school office for details.
The choir performs at school events and also at events in our local community. Over the last year they have performed in local care homes, at the Christmas light switch on and Beccles VE celebrations.
Our Music of the Week is promoted across the school as part of the assemblies and discussed further during music lessons. It provides opportunities for the children to learn more about the history of music and the impact that the artists have on the music world today. The music includes classical and popular music and musical traditions with a spread of diversity, gender, world and UK musicians.
