Writing
At Albert Pye and Ravensmere, we understand the immense significance of writing as a vital skill for every student not only in literacy but across the curriculum. The ability to write with confidence for a range of purposes and audiences ensures that children leave Albert Pye with an ability to express their thoughts, ideas and emotions clearly and creatively through the written word.
The writing curriculum at Albert Pye and Ravensmere encourages children to immerse themselves in different text types, understand the features, impact and purpose of these, and to know the importance of them in the wider world and beyond education. We do this through a clear sequence of learning that encourages active, engaging lessons to inspire a love and creativity for texts and writing.
A secure knowledge of spelling, grammar and punctuation are taught to ensure that the children understand their writing on a structural level and how to use this to create more effective writing. The children are encouraged to edit throughout and after writing and are taught view writing as a process that requires persistence. As children progress through the school they are encouraged, with increasing independence, to identify the improvements and corrections needed in their writing.

In writing, we use a document called the Teachers Assessment Framework (TAFs) to assess children's written work. Each child has a named TAF sheet and at the end of each unit of writing (every 3 weeks) their larger pieces of writing are assessed using this document. Throughout the lessons leading up to this larger write, the class teacher is making assessments and giving feedback so that the children can improve their writing.
